Starting in Lhasa, visit the great Potala Palace, the beautiful Norbulingka Summer Palace, the holy Jokhang Temple, and the lively Barkhor market. On the way out of town, watch monks debate at Sera Monastery and explore the well-preserved temples of Drepung Monastery.
Drive down to historic Gyantse, over snowy passes with fantastic views, and on to Shigatse and Old Tingri. Start trekking along the Ra Chu stream, which will lead you through small villages. Cross over Lamna pass, up Draka Chu River, and finally up to Rongbuk Monastery, the highest in the world. From Rongbuk head to Everest Base Camp, which offers gorgeous views of the North Face. On the way back to Lhasa, take a detour to the Nepal border.
