Hike the surrounding hills for panoramic views before driving south to the shores of Qinghai Lake, China's largest saltwater lake. Here, vast grasslands dotted with Tibetan nomads and their herds create a timeless landscape. Spend the night near the lake's south shore, then return to Xining on Day 2, with memories of sacred art and pristine nature. Pick up from your hotel in Xing and you will go from Xining to the famous Tibetan Buddhist monastery of Kumbum (Ta’er in Chinese). Kumbum is home to over 600 monks and has some great hills around the monastery to hike. After the monastery, you will drive out to the south shore of Qinghai Lake, the largest lake in China. The grasslands near the lake are home to Tibetan nomads herding their yaks and sheep.
You will return to Xining from Qinghai Lake and take train or fight out of Xining.
